How to clean a deck

Whether it's after the long winter, a party, or just normal maintenance, decks need a good clean up every once in a while. This task can be long and labor intensive for some but it can also be a quick and easy task depending on the decking materials you use.

Below you'll see how to clean a deck for three different types of decking materials:

PVC Decking Cleaning:

Gossen's PVC decks and railings require very little maintenance and can have you back to other chores in no time. Gossen's PVC decks require a simple soap and water cleaning process for yearly deck maintenance, stain removal, and mold removal. Additionally, Gossen's PVC decks don't fade from sunlight exposure over the years.

Composite Deck Cleaning:

Composite decks require extensive maintenance for upkeep. Yearly maintenance and clean up you'll need to wash the deck and allow it to dry. Then you'll need to repaint the deck and then reseal. Doing this every year or two will allow you to keep your deck looking good.

To remove stains on composite decks you'll need to powerwash the deck first. After the composite deck dries, you can then repaint to cover it and then reseal.

To tackle mold on composite decking you'll need to obtain a professional strength mold cleaner and scrub the composite deck down. After this let the deck dry and then paint to cover and reseal.

To resist the effects of fading on a composite deck wash the deck and allow to dry. Then paint to recover and reseal.

Wood Deck Cleaning:

Wood decks also require extensive maintenance for upkeep. Yearly maintenance and general upkeep of a wood deck requires a powerwash and needed sanding. After allowing the deck to dry paint to cover and reseal.

To remove stains on a wood deck first powerwash the deck and sand any areas needing extra attention.

To remove mold from a wood deck apply the same technique. Powerwash the deck, then sand down any areas needing the attention.

To resist the fading effects on a wood deck first wash the deck thoroughly, after allowing to dry stain to cover the deck and then reseal.

Unfortunately, cleaning decks is not an easy task especially when it becomes a yearly requirement. Thankfully newer technologies such as Gossen's PVC decking materials allow us to have a deck that looks just as good as wood with a minor fraction of the upkeep and no fading.
